We are looking for a (Senior) Underwriting Legal Expert with a focus on wording topics in the dynamic and evolving market environment across APAC, Middle East and Africa (APA). Reporting to the Head of APA Underwriting Specialist Team, you will be responsible for developing enhanced expertise in contract language and reinsurance documentation, positioning yourself as a thought leader by sharing insights and best practices, and promoting uniformity in wording standards across various units and locations.
Your role will involve aligning wording strategies with Munich Re’s strategic goals, proactively identifying and mitigating legal risks, and strengthening execution capabilities to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives. You will facilitate the integration of best practices into daily operations, foster collaboration across departments, and support clear guidelines to enhance operational efficiency and ensure adherence to agreed-upon standards.
Your Role:
Collaborate with market teams to identify significant legal exposures, legal changes and provide updates (new clauses, court cases, etc.)
Manage external counsel instructions where necessary to mitigate risks
Act as expert technical advisor, guiding Business & Underwriting on contract interpretation & implications
Ensure relevant group guidelines understood and implemented across APA (collaborate with Corporate Underwriting, claims and other Wording Experts)
Lead specific topics within the Wording Expert community, both regionally and globally, while working closely with Munich central function for local/regional considerations.
Serve as the primary point of contact for complex, critical, and/or new legal topics from the underwriting perspectives
Work with Business/ underwriters during renewals to assess contracts across P&C lines
Draft and review reinsurance contracts and proposals from external parties, ensuring alignment with business intent and legal requirements, with a focus on complex or new contracts and critical clauses.
Interpret and explain to the Business including senior management how certain clauses/wordings could impact portfolios and recommend actions to mitigate risks/exposures
Represent MR’s interests in negotiations with clients & brokers on wording/legal matters
Advocate for MR’s position with external legal experts & regulators
Identify training needs related to wording topics and conduct training sessions (internal & external)
Share updates on wording matters with the Underwriting community
Assist on special projects and overarching initiatives, technology and process improvement
Work scope is business within non-life insurance, which may evolve and expand in response to the changing insurance landscape, new technologies and emerging trends.
Your Profile:
University degree in law or equivalent legal qualifications
Comprehensive understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and market practices
Minimum 5 years of reinsurance/ insurance contract/ legal experience, with professional underwriting or claims experience in Property or Casualty is considered a plus
Strong background in managing complex contracts, both RI & direct
Proven analytical depth with the ability to assess legal and business implications effectively
Strong collaboration skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
Effective negotiator with the ability to develop pragmatic solutions to complex issues
Demonstrated creativity in crafting solutions that align with business needs
High degree of personal commitment to the role & company goals
Strong intercultural competence enabling effective collaborations across teams & locations
